Answers To Common Headache Questions

Blogged under Headaches by Linda Lithony on Saturday 11 November 2006 at 6:11 am

Here are the answers to some common questions about headaches and migraines:

Q. Do migraine headaches run in the family?
A. Unfortunately, yes. Migraine headaches appear to be hereditary, with a full eighty percent of migraine sufferers having a family history of the headaches. In a situation in which one parent has migraine headaches, the child has a roughly fifty percent chance of experiencing them as well. In cases where both parents are migraine sufferers, the child has a seventy five percent chance of becoming afflicted with the problem.

Q. What are some of the more common causes for headaches to occur?
A. While we don’t know EXACTLY what causes headaches, we do know that there are many ’triggers’ that can lead to developing a headache. Among these headache triggers are many foods that we commonly consume. One thing that can bring on headaches that many people are unaware of is caffeine. Ingesting caffeine can cause certain people’s bodies to react negatively and they experience a headache. Consumption of alcohol can also greatly increase one’s chance of getting a headache, with red wine being one of the most prominent things that you can indulge in that will result in a headache. People who get headaches all the time should really consider how much they consume trigger foods. Among them are chocolate products, types of aged cheese, and vinegar. Vinegar is a particularly pesky entity like caffeine because few people realize all of the things that vinegar is in. You can find vinegar in salad dressings, many sauces, and ketchup. Also, organ meats such as liver or kidneys can cause headaches, and so can dairy products such as sour cream and yogurt.

Q. Are tension headaches and migraine headaches the only type of headaches?
A. No, they are not. As a matter of fact, the medical community has identified over three hundred different types of headaches! Tension headaches and migraine headaches are only the most commonly experienced headaches. Headaches can also be underlying symptoms of a greater problem. This type of headache is known as a secondary headache, and it can denote that one has a serious health condition such as meningitis or possibly brain cancer.

Q. How do I know if I’m experiencing a chronic headache problem?
A. Doctors diagnose a chronic headache problem as one in which the sufferer experiences headachy symptoms for at least 15 days out of a month. These types of headache sufferers need to consult their doctors for treatment options, as using analgesics to treat headaches over and over again can lead to rebound headaches which are unable to be aided by basic painkillers.

Hopefully, these answers cleared up some of the questions that you have about headaches. There is a vast knowledge available with regards to headaches, and if you’re experiencing a headache problem that is affecting your life to a noticeable degree, you need to speak to a physician, as there are many different types of treatment available for headache problems.

Headaches From Sex

Blogged under Headaches by Linda Lithony on Thursday 9 November 2006 at 8:15 am

Are you suffering from headaches while having sex? Some men might shy away from having intimate relations because of the intense headache pain they experience as they are about to climax. This is a very real problem and although not common it can be a big issue for men in serious relationships. How do you tell your girlfriend or wife that although you love her deeply you cannot make love with her because it hurts your head too much? Many women will assume it’s a line being used to avoid having sex and that their relationship might be in serious danger. But instead what they must do is accompany their man to his health care provider so that this odd phenomenon can be better explained to them.

Oddly headaches during sex seem to hit men at two distinct periods during their lives They will either begin between the ages of twenty and twenty four or somewhere in the thirty five to forty four age range. There is no known explanation for why this occurs at either of these times. Interestingly men who suffer from headaches during sex are very often migraine headache sufferers as well.

Some women do suffer from these headaches as well, but they seem to be outnumbered by the men. Woman, so frequently accused of using headaches as an excuse not to have sex, have even more trouble convincing their lovers of this headache problem being real.

These sex headaches have been classified as an exertion problem. Its like the person is stressing their bodies during sex and like any excessive exertion the body is not handling it well. So the headache starts as the exertion increases. Some physicians will suggest trying to slow down the final phase of intercourse to bring on orgasm slower as sometimes this helps to lessen the headache pain.

Sex headaches are sharp, severe, sudden pain and anything that can be done to diminish this pain is worth a try. Research is still trying to understand the cause of sex headaches, also known as orgasmic cephalalgia. Researchers suspect that the enthusiastic exercise that occurs during intercourse, which raises a person’s blood pressure and increases their heart rate, also releases certain chemicals into the brain. They further surmise that these chemicals then become a headache trigger. There are not a lot of things that can be done to help this inconvenient problem.

Some health care providers suggest the use of a painkiller and anti-inflammatory, a particular one originally used for arthritis treatment that is now being used quite successfully for headrace care as well. Others suggest the use of beta-blockers, which is traditionally a heart medication, which has had some good results in the treatment of migraines.

The suggestion for the lover of someone with this frustrating problem is patience. It is not a psychosomatic headache. Your lover is not feeling intense headache pain just to avoid having sexual relations with you. These headaches will go on for a while and disappear as mysteriously as they appeared.

This Causes Your Headaches

Blogged under Headaches by Linda Lithony on Wednesday 8 November 2006 at 8:20 pm

Headaches and migraines can have many different causes. The best way to get rid of headaches is to find these causes and eliminate them.

Headaches can be a major pain. When headaches come on strong, you may find yourself unable to perform even the simplest of tasks due to the lack of concentration that a headache can cause. Few people understand exactly what the biological reasons behind headaches are, and in this article, we’ll attempt to address the issue as best we can.

There are many reasons that one may feel a headache. While we haven’t discovered the complete scientific reasoning behind headaches, we do know that migraine headaches can be caused by varying levels of neurotransmitters found in the human brain. Neurotransmitters are chemical agents which help us to feel the way that we do, altering our moods and how we feel on a regular basis. The neurotransmitters known as serotonin and 5ht have been shown to be of varying levels in the brain when one experiences a headache.

The Mayo Clinic, a leading research team on medical matters, has stated that a serotonin imbalance in the brain can cause inflammation of the blood vessels in the brain. While it’s not a complete answer, it does help us to understand exactly what is causing the headaches.

Another cause for headaches is when the blood vessels in the brain undergo any sort of change. Since the blood vessels in the brain are the major pathways along which bodily agents may travel, any changes to their structure can result in a feeling of intense pain. Researchers have also stated that they have found out that the level of magnesium found in a person’s brain drops when they have a headache.

To that end, many researchers believe that a lack of sufficient magnesium may bring on a headache. While these are some basic biological reasons that one may experience a headache, there are a host of more personal issues that can trigger a headache.

One thing that often leads people to having headaches is the food that they consume. While the foods that can bring on headaches vary from person to person, some of the most common foods known to bring on headaches include any type of alcohol, aged cheese, and chocolate. Also, foods that are pickled in brine can bring on headaches, as well as a few ingredients found in many products: MSG, aspartame, and caffeine. While these foods can cause different levels of headaches amongst those who consume them, fasting is another easy way to bring on a headache. When the body doesn’t get enough food, you may begin to feel lightheaded and a headache may come on.

Hormones are another leading cause of headaches. Many women complain of intense headaches when their levels of estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, with many women reporting headaches occurring most often before or during their monthly period.

Also, one may feel intense headaches when they do not get enough sleep, or if they get too much. Sensory overload is another reason that people experience headaches - being around an unfamiliar and powerful smell, or in an area of intense sound or bright light may bring on a headache. The state of the body needs to be considered, as well, as overly exerted people often experience headaches, as do those who are under a large amount of stress.
