Blogged under Anorexia Nervosa by Linda Lithony on Thursday 12 April 2007 at 5:46 am

signs-of-anorexiaIt is important to look for the signs of anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder that can lead to death. Anorexia is difficult to treat as it is a mental illness. Some persons suffer their whole life from it.

While the real causes of anorexia are still not known, it is assumed that eating and dieting habits can somehow become their own life. A sign of anorexia is that the affected person does not stop to diet although he or she has achieved the dietary goal already.

There is a distorted view of the own body. While slim and underweight already, the affected person still believes to be fat and overweight. Another warning sign is depression with the obsession to control something. In this case, controlling the own body weight gives the person a degree of satisfaction.

pro anorexiaThere are many pro anorexia sites out there. Since anorexia nervosa is a serious mental illness with a pretty high mortality rate, higher than some cancers, the question is if pro anorexia sites are harmful or not. Is it even possible that such web sites can cause an illness or worsen it?

These sites propagandize a lifestyle of dieting to become ultra slim. Some of the tips are harmful like the advice on taking drugs to loose weight. Other tips are simple dieting tips anybody should or could use to achieve a healthy slim body. It is important to make a difference. It is the wrong advice that causes harm.

Most pro anorexia sites are nothing more than dieting or weight loss sites. To name these sites pro anorexia sites is what causes confusion. There is nothing glorious in suffering from anorexia nervosa. Nobody with the right mind is really asking for tips on how to get ill.

For these people dieting and maintaining a slim body is a lifestyle. By naming themselves pro anorexia they want to separate themselves from common fitness or weight loss sites.

Bamboo-PlantWhat does a bamboo plant have to do with your health? This may look off-topic at first but when you take a closer look you will see that you could possibly find quite a lot of people who will tell you that bamboo plants can have a lot to do with health.

Bamboo has always been very common in Asia and mainly in China. Bamboo is still used in many countries to treat several diseases. Bamboo also has its place in Feng Shui, a very old and nowadays very popular practice which teaches the arrangement of space to achieve more harmony.

Very popular are the lucky bamboo plants. The Chinese tradition says they bring health, luck and harmony to the bearer and also to the place where they are. In China you can find the lucky bamboo in almost every household and even in each room. To be correct though, this plant is not a bamboo plant but a simple house plant which just looks like bamboo…

More and more pictures of anorexic people are getting published recently. Many celebrities and super models are in the line of fire of the public media. While it is not the business of anybody to judge over somebody else, some of the anorexic pictures are really horrible.

Young people today are bombarded by pictures of slim famous people. There is nothing bad with it. Obesity is a much bigger problem today. However, celebrities and models are idols for many young people and they should be aware that their exaggeration can cause harm in their followers.

While models are adult professionals knowing all the dieting tricks and always have professional advisors around them, the young fans just follow them blindly without support and often ending up with eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, binge eating and bulimia.

The Anorexic Models Ban

Blogged under Anorexia Nervosa by Linda Lithony on Tuesday 13 March 2007 at 9:04 am

The media is full recently with the hype of anorexic models on the catwalk. It is true, some of them really need a snack but most of them do not just look great but are also living and eating healthy. Just recently some of the modeling agencies and organisators of fashion events are have been banning models with a BMI of less than 18.

There are many who believe that this is not a solution for the problem. First of all because the problem is one of a minority and secondly we know from the past that these kind of regulations do not work. Anorexia nervosa is a serious illness and needs treatment. But without doubt the exaggeration in the media recently is doing more harm than good and will just punish models which are healthy.

Models who cross the line usually do this intentionally, abuse drugs and other harmful dieting techniques. Some loose control and drift into anorexia nervosa. They definitely need our immediate help and support but let the other models do their work as well.
