The Difference Between Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery

Blogged under Cosmetic Surgery by Linda Lithony on Thursday 16 November 2006 at 4:00 am

With the advances in surgery technology more and more people turned to cosmetic and plastic surgery. With this has come the idea to look health, young and beautiful is a standard. If you are considering a procedure for changing your looks, then you also may be looking into cosmetic surgery. Before you decide on a procedure, you will want to know the differences between the standards. One of the differences is between cosmetic and plastic surgery. While these are both defined as similar surgeries, there are several differences in the definition.

Cosmetic surgery, as defined by the surgeon’s standards, is based purely on redefining your looks. If you are not satisfied with a facial or body feature, you can use cosmetic surgery to change the specific area. Cosmetic surgery is known to focus on reducing lines and wrinkles in the face, taking out body fat in a specific area, or lifting, supplementing or reducing a specific feature of the body.

Plastic surgery, on the other hand, focuses on reconstruction of parts of the body. If you have a birth defect, injury, or disease that has caused a change in your features, you may use plastic surgery instead of cosmetic surgery to change your body. Plastic surgery is known to take out imbalances as well as heal areas that are deformed or have caused pain or problems in the past. If you have had surgery from a disease, a plastic surgeon may be used to reform your body image.

As cosmetic and plastic surgery advance, the standards, and knowledge for them have also advanced. One of your choices will be, what surgeon will you use. While both are needed to attend medical school to perform the surgery, their backgrounds may be different. Both a cosmetic and plastic surgeon will be required to get the same medical background training. However, a cosmetic surgeon will not be able to receive educational training for cosmetics specifically. They will get most training through a post-residency training program that consists of workshops, seminars, and eventually a certification.

Plastic surgeons, after going through the educational background will also need to complete a specific timeline for a training program. However, the focus, instead of being on cosmetics, will be on learning how to treat problems through surgery, such as tumors, deformities, and other types of complications. They will then receive a certificate for plastic surgery specifically. Either of these doctors will have the option of becoming trained in both cosmetic and plastic surgery.

If you are looking into a cosmetic surgery, you will want to make sure the surgeon is certified through a specific training program and the have the right medical history. This will be different then finding a surgeon to work on reconstruction of your body from a defect. By understanding the difference between these two types of surgeons and surgeries, you will be able to remove some of the choices for a surgeon when deciding to have cosmetic surgery.

Cosmetic Surgery for the Nose

Blogged under Cosmetic Surgery by Linda Lithony on Wednesday 15 November 2006 at 2:00 pm

Cosmetic surgery is most popularly known for helping to improve someone’s looks. A particular part of the body will be focused on and readjusted to give them a different appearance. However, cosmetic surgery can also help to improve a birth defect or injury that has resulted in reshaping the face. One of the well-known surgeries for helping to solve this problem is a septoplasty.

A Septoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that focuses on the nose. Normally, the nose will have a separation between the two sides. This separation is made of cartilage and bone. It will often be referred to as the nasal septum. A Septoplasty will be a form of cosmetic surgery for the nasal septum, which causes problems with breathing.

Other nose abnormalities may also use cosmetic surgery to remove the problem. A polyp or tumor may move into the area of the nose, which will cause larger problems. The ethmoid bone, which is part of the nasal cavity, may not be centered and cause difficulties with normal breathing. Often, these types of nasal surgeries will also call for cosmetic surgery procedures as it removes a different area of the nose, however, they are the same as a Septoplasty.

You may decide if you need cosmetic surgery to the nose in several different ways. If it is hard to breathe through your nose, then it may be because the bone and cartilage area is not centered. This may also cause nosebleeds or headaches more often than normal. The nasal septum may also have become irregular from an injury or another surgery that was done on your nose. All of these will lead to getting an examination to see if the nasal septum is off. Your doctor can also find out if you have any other abnormalities in the nose from a first examination, allowing you to decide if you need another cosmetic surgery.

When you get a Septoplasty, the nasal septum will be straightened out to allow normal functioning. After you are put under an anesthesia, the doctors will numb the tissue around the nose. They will then make an incision into the nasal septum area. The next step will be to take the membrane that is attached to the nasal septum away from the bone area. The doctors will then be able to see which part of the nose is not centered and remove the bone. This will be replaced with plastic surgery procedures, which will allow the nasal septum to become straight and allow for easier breathing. This same procedure will be followed for other complications, however, the focus will be on the area that needs removed or replaced.

If you have complications with breathing, or if it has been determined that a part of your nose is not balanced, you can easily fix the problem with cosmetic surgery procedures. Getting a Septoplasty or other reconstructive cosmetic surgery will help in moving you back to the normal functioning of breathing properly.

How Hemorrhoid Surgery Works

Blogged under Hemorrhoids by Linda Lithony on Tuesday 14 November 2006 at 10:34 am

There are various degrees of hemorrhoids, from mild to moderate. Many will have hemorrhoids at a more severe level. If you are suffering from severe hemorrhoids, it may be necessary to have surgery to have the blood vessels removed. Not doing so will cause problems later. By knowing what is involved in hemorrhoid surgery, you can decide if it is right for you to look into.

When one decides to get Hemorrhoid surgery, they can expect to have their rectum adjusted to relieve pressure off the blood vessels in this area. The rectum is the last area of the digestive system. When it is functioning properly, it will easily move stools through the body. When hemorrhoids are in the rectum, it will cause the area to not be able to move the digestive area properly. The hemorrhoids will act as cushions of tissue. These will be filled with blood and cause pain every time digestion is moving through this area.

If the hemorrhoids are severe, they will not only be cushions around the rectum area, but will also become swollen and inflamed. When this occurs, bleeding will occur while digestion is moving through your body. There will also be constant pain and itching in this area as well. If this can’t be relieved through other regular methods of treating the hemorrhoids, than surgery will become a necessary way of trying to treat the swelling from the blood vessels.

Doctors will get rid of hemorrhoids that are in this area in three ways. Hemorrhoid surgery is usually considered a mild surgery and does not take much time. After you are in the surgery area, you will be given medication to relax. From here, the surgeon can either remove the hemorrhoid by cutting it at the base of the vessel. Other methods will use a band and tie it around the hemorrhoid. This will then cause the hemorrhoid to not receive the blood circulation that is needed. Eventually, the hemorrhoid will fall off the rectum. The third surgery will be to put a sclerosing agent in the hemorrhoid. This will cause the vessels around the hemorrhoid to be destroyed. Eventually, this will cause it to fall off the rectum.

If you have hemorrhoids that are preventing you not only the regular comfort needed, but have caused you to not be able to work normally, you may want to look into ways to treat the problem. One of the choices that are available for you is to have surgery for the hemorrhoids. If no other natural methods have worked, this may be important to look into. This is especially important to know about if you have severe hemorrhoids. Knowing choices for hemorrhoid surgery and if it is needed to treat your problem is the first step in deciding whether you should talk to your doctor about hemorrhoid surgery.

Pilates - Mat Workouts For Better Fitness

Blogged under Pilates by Linda Lithony on Monday 13 November 2006 at 3:50 pm

Pilates is all about mat workouts. Get in a daily routine to profit from it. It’s the best way for a beginner to get involved into the program, and at the same time, it’s one of the hardest parts of the exercise to fully develop. These exercises are useful in helping the body to become strengthened and realigned, with increases in posture and balance occurring rapidly. In this article, we’ll give you a basic outline of some of the parts of the mat exercise program with regards to pilates.

In the original pilates program organized by Joseph Pilates years ago, there are 44 different mat exercises. The exercises center around six basic principles which are the foundation for the program. The principles are: centering, concentration, control, precision, breathing, and flowing movement. Based off of earlier exercises incorporated into yoga thousands of years ago, mat exercises are performed while sitting or in a reclined position.

These exercises form much of the basis of a pilates routine. While some trumpet the merits of pilates equipment and neglect the basic mat work, it’s important to perform and it’s a part of pilates that you can perform anywhere, regardless of conditions. Most beginners are recommended to attend a class in order to get a very basic understanding of how to properly perform the exercises. Below are a few basic mat workout exercises which can help you to begin pilates.

First is supine breathing. Supine is a term that refers to laying on your back with your face facing upwards. You should lie on your back with your knees bent at about a 45 degree angle. Place one of your hands on the lower part of your stomach, and inhale deeply through the nose. Feel the way your hand moves when you take in the breath. Next, exhale, and try to focus on the movement of pulling your belly button as close to your spine as you can. Take these breaths between four and six times; this will help you to relieve stress and relax before engaging in other pilates exercises.

Next comes the cat stretch; for this exercise, you’re going to need to be on your hands and knees, with your knees directly underneath your hips and your hands underneath your shoulders. Lay your hands out flat and contract your abs, causing your spine to be more properly aligned. As you inhale, pull your head upwards until you are looking in front of you. When it comes time to exhale, tuck your chin and do your best to pull your belly inwards and towards your spine. Repeat this four to six times.

These are just a few of the breathing exercises that surmise a pilates routine. They are some of the first things to learn when beginning a pilates program, and consequently can be very important to your success. Now that you know a few of the basics of mat work, you can better understand exactly what makes up the pilates exercises. There are many different positions and exercises to learn, and with some dedication, you can find yourself a self-fashioned expert.

Natural Beauty With Vitamins

Blogged under Vitamins by Linda Lithony on Monday 13 November 2006 at 6:01 am

Vitamins play an important role in how we look and feel. Our body needs vitamins not only to survive. Vitamins are necessary to produce skin, hair and nails for example. Giving your body the vitamins he needs will help you to maintain your natural beauty.

Vitamin A is a crucial compound when it comes to the growth and repair of our body’s tissues. It is truly a wonder-vitamin, helping our skin to stay smooth and healthy, as well as protecting our mucous membranes. The mouth, nose, throat and lungs all benefit from proper Vitamin A consumption. In addition, Vitamin A aids in the formation of our bones and teeth. Basically, it is a building block that our body needs to maintain a healthy appearance.

The B-complex of vitamins holds the key to many facets of our health and appearance. Given the fact that there are receptors on all cells in the body for the B Vitamins, it is clear that we do not fully understand them yet; however, there are many visible effects the B Vitamins are responsible for. Vision, skin, nails and hair are all affected in a positive manner by Vitamin B-2, which also goes by the name of Riboflavin. Niacin, or Vitamin B-3, has been known to help in maintaining healthy skin, as well as helping your tongue stay healthy. Pyroxidine, Vitamin B-6, is also a factor in healthy skin. These are just the functions of the Vitamin B-Complex which pertain to beauty; they also facilitate metabolism and help to create energy in the body.

Vitamin C is another important factor when it comes to maintaining the beauty of the human body. Getting enough Vitamin C is crucial, because without it, the body cannot properly synthesize collagen. Collagen is an agent which is present in many parts of the body, forming a connective tissue between different entities. Healthy teeth, healthy bones, gums, and the healing of scar tissue and wounds are all positive side-effects of a regular Vitamin C regimen.

Vitamin E can also be beneficial to those who wish to enhance their beauty. It is a powerful anti-oxidant, which is useful to the body when it tries to fight off the harmful effects of free radicals, which are rogue cells which seek to damage the cell membranes present in the human body. This can result in a slowing of the aging of our cells, allowing all of our body to use the same cells for longer periods of time.

While these vitamins can all help you when it comes to maintaining the beauty of the various parts of your body, it is important to get all of the vitamins on a regular basis. Many key body processes besides those that are related to a healthy appearance are performed by vitamins. To get all of the vitamins you need, try your best to stick to a diet that revolves around the food pyramid. Eating enough of a variety of healthy foods can lead to your body getting all the vitamins it needs, without having to resort to supplements.

What Are Vitamins?

Blogged under Vitamins by Linda Lithony on Saturday 11 November 2006 at 5:32 pm

Vitamins are essential and have to be in our diet in sufficient form. If we don’t get enough vitamins we become ill. There are different vitamins and each vitamin can be assigned to particular diseases.

Vitamins are organic substances divided into water-soluble and fat-soluble. They are diverse in nature and are normally organic and found in our regular diet. They help preserve life and promote growth. They are different in function from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. They also vary in the amounts the body needs.

Vitamin originated from the word "vitamine" which was first used in 1911. They were thought to all have a nitrogen-containing ingredient known as asmines. When it was discovered not all the compounds contained asmines, the "e" was dropped and the word became vitamin.

There are different ways of deciding what we need in our diet. There are several items that decide what each of us needs to keep our body healthy. Genetic differences, any prescription drugs we may be on, if we have environmental stresses, and what other foods are included in our diet may affect how much of any vitamin we need to thrive. Recommended daily allowances are useful in helping us to decide what vitamins we need, but these are only guidelines.

Vitamins are important for our health and they help prevent diseases that are associated with a shortage of that vitamin. Diseases such as rickets, scurvy, pellagra and beriberi are diseases caused by lack of specific vitamins. Before you write them off as diseases that no longer exist, my grandson was hospitalized in serious condition because of rickets. His body was not using the Vitamin D that was in his body. Vitamins keep our bones and teeth healthy, keep us from going blind, and makes sure we don’t have unexpected bleeding in our bodies. Some studies show that Vitamins C and E helps reduce our risk of Alzheimer’s disease if they are combined in high doses. Vitamins protect our hearts from damage and help prevent cancer.

If we eat a balanced diet, we get most of the vitamins our body needs. The problem is, not all of us eat a balanced diet. Our body may also need higher doses of some vitamins to help prevent some diseases. We may also need more than the RDA requires for the vitamin be of maximum benefit.

Many vitamins for sale on the shelves of a pharmacy or supermarket may not include enough of a vitamin that is needed as a minimum. Read your labels, does your multivitamin give you 400 IU of Vitamin E? That is the amount your body needs as a minimum. Some vitamins are water soluble which means that if you have get too much the excess passes from the body through the urine. That means that we must restore our supply daily to have the amount we need for our bodies. Look at the label of your multivitamin. Is it giving you the amount your body needs?

What Is Pilates?

Blogged under Pilates by Linda Lithony on Saturday 11 November 2006 at 5:22 pm

Pilates has become a popular fitness trend today. Pilates strengthens body and tone muscles with a series of controlled movements and helps to increase your range of movement. Pilates has been popular with gymnasts and professional dancers for many years. Part of its popularity has to do with the fact that pilates can help increase strength, coordination, flexibility and endurance without adding bulky muscles.

Pilates has lately become very popular among Hollywood actors as well because it effective in shaping and toning the body. Now, pilates has become popular among the general public precisely because of its reputation as an effective body sculpting and core strengthening exercise routine. In fact, most people who practice pilates on a regular basis report feelings of increased flexibility, tone, improved posture, mood, and overall better health.

It’s interesting to note that pilates has become popular with famous actors and athletes in light of its origins. Originally pilates was designed to treat immobile or otherwise bedridden soldier patients during World War I in Great Britain. Joseph H. Pilates designed the pilates exercises. He was working as a nurse at the time and noticed a need for physical rehabilitation and therapy for injured and immobile soldiers. He designed the bulk of the movements and exercises that are still in use today. Pilates himself was born in Germany.

As a child, Pilates had been a sickly child. He was afflicted with asthma, rickets, and other childhood ailments that left his body weak and frail. He sought to make his body stronger by taking up several sports and becoming a dedicated athlete. Finally while working as a nurse during World War I, he developed the exercise regime that he would forever be associated with.

Like yoga and other mind-body exercise formats, pilates is linked to a philosophy of health and flexibility in both the mind and body. Pilates himself studied yoga and Chinese martial arts and incorporated aspects of these wellness practices into his format. Pilates made a strong connection between emotional and physical health and strove to produce a format that revolved around this fundamental principle. At the core of pilates is a strong philosophy centered on the attributes of focus, precision, concentration, control, breath, flow, and strength.

Like yoga, pilates is often practiced on a mat. Mat routines are common, and so is the use of various supporting accessories and tools. Mat exercises and routine are the most common way to practice pilates. Another popular pilates format is the training method. Training involves the use of various machines to strengthen and tone muscles. Both approaches to pilates involve the use of resistance and controlled movements to achieve the desired results. Most people who do pilates report that it can be difficult at first, but that the body slowly conforms to the practice.

Answers To Common Headache Questions

Blogged under Headaches by Linda Lithony on Saturday 11 November 2006 at 6:11 am

Here are the answers to some common questions about headaches and migraines:

Q. Do migraine headaches run in the family?
A. Unfortunately, yes. Migraine headaches appear to be hereditary, with a full eighty percent of migraine sufferers having a family history of the headaches. In a situation in which one parent has migraine headaches, the child has a roughly fifty percent chance of experiencing them as well. In cases where both parents are migraine sufferers, the child has a seventy five percent chance of becoming afflicted with the problem.

Q. What are some of the more common causes for headaches to occur?
A. While we don’t know EXACTLY what causes headaches, we do know that there are many ’triggers’ that can lead to developing a headache. Among these headache triggers are many foods that we commonly consume. One thing that can bring on headaches that many people are unaware of is caffeine. Ingesting caffeine can cause certain people’s bodies to react negatively and they experience a headache. Consumption of alcohol can also greatly increase one’s chance of getting a headache, with red wine being one of the most prominent things that you can indulge in that will result in a headache. People who get headaches all the time should really consider how much they consume trigger foods. Among them are chocolate products, types of aged cheese, and vinegar. Vinegar is a particularly pesky entity like caffeine because few people realize all of the things that vinegar is in. You can find vinegar in salad dressings, many sauces, and ketchup. Also, organ meats such as liver or kidneys can cause headaches, and so can dairy products such as sour cream and yogurt.

Q. Are tension headaches and migraine headaches the only type of headaches?
A. No, they are not. As a matter of fact, the medical community has identified over three hundred different types of headaches! Tension headaches and migraine headaches are only the most commonly experienced headaches. Headaches can also be underlying symptoms of a greater problem. This type of headache is known as a secondary headache, and it can denote that one has a serious health condition such as meningitis or possibly brain cancer.

Q. How do I know if I’m experiencing a chronic headache problem?
A. Doctors diagnose a chronic headache problem as one in which the sufferer experiences headachy symptoms for at least 15 days out of a month. These types of headache sufferers need to consult their doctors for treatment options, as using analgesics to treat headaches over and over again can lead to rebound headaches which are unable to be aided by basic painkillers.

Hopefully, these answers cleared up some of the questions that you have about headaches. There is a vast knowledge available with regards to headaches, and if you’re experiencing a headache problem that is affecting your life to a noticeable degree, you need to speak to a physician, as there are many different types of treatment available for headache problems.

Deciding On Cosmetic Surgery

Blogged under Cosmetic Surgery by Linda Lithony on Thursday 9 November 2006 at 3:54 pm

Deciding weather to get cosmetic surgery or not is a big decision. Beside the financial burden you must think about possible side effects. Cosmetic surgery can have a dramatic impact on your life. Do careful research because it’s important to know what is right for you. Following are some considerations.

Cosmetic surgery is known to be effective for various purposes, but the most common use is for changing the looks of your body. This will help you to gain self-esteem or be more comfortable with the looks that you have. If age is beginning to wear on you, or you can’t remove excess fat in one area, it may be a consideration for cosmetic surgery. If you feel like your particular looks are getting in the way of you being able to live a complete life, then considering cosmetic surgery is an alternative.

Another consideration with cosmetic surgery is the side affects that it may have. With most surgeries, it will take an average of two weeks to heal. After the surgery, there will be pain, bruising and swelling of the area that was altered. While pain medications can help reduce this, you will need to make sure the side affects don’t cause you to want to change your mind.

Considering cosmetic surgery also includes factoring in price and doctor fees. Depending on the surgery you are getting, the price will alter. However, a typical average for a surgery is between $5,000 and $10,000. You will also want to make sure that you have the right doctor. If you are not comfortable with someone that you have visited, it is best to not use him or her as your cosmetic surgeon. If you don’t have the finances or resources to make the changes, then it will probably be best to wait to get the surgery until you are ready with the practical aspects.

Considering cosmetic surgery also means being ready for the results that you will see. Even though you are expecting a specific look, it may not be exactly what was expected. This is a problem in face changes among many, as well as changes made from other areas of the body. Most surgeons will state the results you expect will be better, but may not be perfect. It is important to set reasonable expectations before the surgery.

If you are thinking about cosmetic surgery to change a feature that you don’t like, think about these factors before deciding on surgery. By knowing what the different elements are, as well as weighing their importance in your decision, you can make a logical choice in whether cosmetic surgery is the right step for you. Investigating, knowing what to consider, and not jumping into the process is important in allowing yourself the room to decide if cosmetic surgery is for you.
